The Nature of God: The Virgin Birth of Jesus

Statement of Belief

We believe that Jesus was literally conceived and born as flesh and blood of a virgin name Mary.

Isaiah 7:14 — Luke 1:26-33 1)

Additional Information

We maintain with unwavering conviction that Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Savior of the world, was not born through the natural means of procreation, but was miraculously conceived in and born from a virgin. This belief is anchored on the divinely-inspired scriptural accounts in the book of Isaiah 7:14 and Luke 1:26-33.

Firstly, we consider the prophetic pronouncement by the Prophet Isaiah as a key cornerstone of our belief. In the passage, the prophet writes, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). We interpret this prophecy to refer to the miraculous conception and birth of Jesus Christ. The term “Immanuel,” meaning “God with us,” signifies the divine nature of Jesus who, though born of a woman, was truly God incarnate, embodying God's presence among His people.

The Gospel of Luke affirms and fulfills this prophecy. Luke provides a detailed narrative of the angel Gabriel's annunciation to Mary, a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph. Luke writes, “The angel went to her and said, 'Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.'… 'You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end'” (Luke 1:28, 31-33).

These passages not only confirm the miraculous circumstances of Jesus's conception and birth, but also underscore the critical importance of His birth from a virgin. The Virgin Birth, we believe, affirms Jesus's divine origin, upholds His sinless nature, and accentuates the intersection of the divine and the human in the person of Jesus Christ. It illustrates the unprecedented incursion of God into human history, taking on human flesh, not through the ordinary biological process, but through a divine act that transcends natural laws.

We affirm this belief with profound reverence for the mystery of the Incarnation — God becoming man in the person of Jesus Christ. The Virgin Birth is thus more than just an historical event; it's a theological statement that conveys the uniqueness of Jesus Christ and His mission to redeem humanity. In our faith, it stands as a testament to God's power, love, and unfathomable grace, demonstrating that God's ways are indeed beyond human understanding. Through the Virgin Birth, God bridges the gap between the divine and the human, bringing hope and salvation to all of mankind.
