Balancing Faith and Works: The Dynamics of Divine Salvation
In the spirit of love and divine enlightenment, let us venture on a sacred exploration. We seek answers to a question that has perplexed many hearts: “Am I saved by keeping the commandments?” While the question seems straightforward, its answer is intricately woven into the fabric of God's great plan of salvation.
Faith
Let's first anchor ourselves in the unfailing truth of God's grace. Salvation is not earned; it is gifted. As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9). This truth shines a beacon of hope to all humanity: our salvation comes not through our merit, but through faith in Jesus Christ.
Works
Where does this place the commandments of God? If faith alone brings salvation, are we then relieved from obedience to God's word? The Apostle Paul answers resoundingly, “Absolutely not!” (Romans 6:15). For faith is not mere intellectual assent, but an active, transforming relationship with Jesus, one that bears fruit in obedience.
Spirit
We must acknowledge that keeping God's commandments can seem a heavy burden. For those yet to experience the liberating power of Jesus' salvation, the commandments may seem overwhelming, perhaps even impossible. Yet to those who have been saved, these commandments are a source of joy and strength.
In this transformative relationship with Jesus, the Holy Spirit stirs within us, providing power where we find weakness. The struggle remains, yes, but the Spirit sustains us. It is the Holy Spirit who bolsters us, as Paul wrote, “But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:11).
As James, the brother of Jesus, eloquently stated, “For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” (James 2:26). True faith, vibrant and living, drives us to action. It compels us to adhere to the commandments, not out of compulsion or fear, but out of a deep-seated love for our Savior.
Love
Jesus Himself taught, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15). This was not a mandate to earn salvation through obedience but a profound truth about the nature of our relationship with Him. Genuine love for Jesus naturally aligns our will with His, making obedience a joyful response rather than a burdensome duty.
So, friends, salvation doesn't hinge on keeping the commandments but on faith in Jesus. Embrace the grace of God, let your life be a testament to His transformative power, and let your obedience to His commandments be the fragrant fruit of your faith. It is by such fruits of love and obedience that the world will recognize us, marking us as followers of Jesus Christ.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
Amen.
