Additional Information
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I greet you in the name of our Savior, in whom we share a common faith, no matter the name written on the door of the church we attend. The question on our hearts today is, “How should one denomination view the teachings and beliefs of another?”
In the wisdom of scripture, and with the spirit of unity that binds us as the Body of Christ, we seek an answer. We start with a truth that Apostle Paul shared with the Corinthians: “Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different results, but the same God who produces all of them in everyone” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6). This reminds us that variety in our beliefs and practices can be part of God's plan.
When we look at other denominations, we approach first with humility. No one church has complete understanding of God's infinite wisdom. As Proverbs 11:2 reminds us, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
Secondly, we must approach with love. As our Lord Jesus Christ taught, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). Our response to differing beliefs should reflect this love and the second commandment.
Lastly, we must approach with discernment. As the Apostle Paul advised the Thessalonians, “But examine all things; hold fast to what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Rather than dismissing unfamiliar teachings, we are to engage them prayerfully, asking for the Holy Spirit's guidance in understanding and evaluating them.
Now, in the event we encounter teachings that, upon prayerful examination, are found to be wanting or even blatantly false, our response should still be framed in love and humility. When we find ourselves in such a situation, it is not our place to stand in judgment or condemnation. Instead, we should offer loving correction where possible, always with a spirit of gentleness, humility, and respect. Galatians 6:1 advises, “Brothers and sisters, if a person is discovered in some sin, you who are spiritual restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness.” It is also essential that we pray for those who may have fallen into false teachings, asking the Lord to guide them back to the truth of His word.
We are all part of the Body of Christ. Our shared faith in Christ, our shared commitment to love God and our neighbor, and our shared hope in the promise of eternal life are what truly matter. As we encounter different teachings and beliefs, let us remember to approach them with humility, love, and discernment. In this, we can better understand each other, learn from each other, and strengthen the unity of the Body of Christ.
Let us strive for unity, not uniformity. Let our differences serve not as sources of division, but as opportunities for growth. And let us always remember the words of our Lord in John 13:35, “Everyone will know by this that you are my disciples—if you have love for one another.” May the Lord bless us with wisdom, love, and unity as we seek to understand and respect the diverse ways in which His people worship and serve Him. Amen.
